The Commonwealth Grants Commission has been asked by the Commonwealth Government to inquire into the distribution of funding from Commonwealth expenditure programs that affect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The Inquiry is expected to develop measures of relative disadvantage that can be used to target resources more effectively to those in greatest need. The Commission must report to the Commonwealth Government, by 28 March 2001, on a method of measuring the needs of groups of indigenous people relative to one another for government services funded by the Commonwealth.
