The Commonwealth Grants Commission (CGC) is part of the wider Treasury Portfolio and has played a central role in Commonwealth-State financial relations since 1933.

Our Commissioners, supported by the Secretariat, make decisions about how to measure states’ relative fiscal capacities according to the principle of horizontal fiscal equalisation (HFE). Commission members are appointed under the  Commonwealth Grants Commission Act 1973 by the Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia.
